Islamabad, March 13, 2023 (PPI-OT): Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Mr. Rana Tanveer held an online meeting with the representatives of ‘Education Cannot Wait Mission’ under UNICEF led by Mr. Maarten Bartends, Chief Humanitarian Liaison, Mr. Robert Edward Dutton and Mr. Jihane Latrous, Gender Manager UNICEF today on 13th March, 2023.

Education Cannot Wait (ECW) announced today a new fast-acting US$2 million First Emergency Response Grant that will reach 47,000 girls and boys impacted by the massive floods in Chad, bringing ECW funding to Chad to over US$38 million so far, including ECW’s multi-year humanitarian-development investments.

On 16 and 17 February, Education Cannot Wait (ECW) High-Level Financing Conference took place in Geneva. This was co-hosted by ECW with the government of Switzerland; and co-convened by the governments of Colombia, Germany, Niger, Norway and South Sudan.

t has been one month since the devastating earthquake in Türkiye and Syria, that claimed over 51,000 lives and flattened entire neighborhoods and ecosystems. The devastation to infrastructure cannot be understated, over 54,000 buildings were destroyed and the World Bank estimates the earthquake has cost $34bn of damage to Türkiye alone. In the aftermath, many of the hundreds of thousands of children in the region find themselves without access to their schools and quality education.

Additional meetings and visits made by Minister Sajjan in Bangladesh and the Philippines

While in Bangladesh, Minister Sajjan met with Abul Kalam Abdul Momen, Minister of Foreign Affairs. In this meeting, he underlined Canada’s commitment to deepening its engagement in the Indo-Pacific region and to the long and successful development partnership between Canada and Bangladesh. They discussed our responses to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including its impact on food security, and the interlinked Rohingya refugee crisis and situation in Myanmar.

Minister Sajjan spoke with Rohingya refugees living at the Ukhiya refugee camp to understand their experiences and aspirations. He also discussed their educational needs and the challenges they face. There, he reiterated Canada’s support for skills development and for refugee and host community education, highlighting Canada’s recent pledge to Education Cannot Wait, the UN global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, which includes $27.5 million in funding to the Multi-Year Resilience Programme in Bangladesh.

With the severe drought situation deteriorating, UNICEF Kenya revised its HAC 2022 due to the increased people in need and in line with the revision of the Kenya Inter-Agency Drought Flash Appeal 2022, increasing the financial requirements to USD 126.9 million to provide life-saving services to the drought-affected children and women. Approximately USD 53.1 million (42 per cent) has been received against the HAC, of which USD 51 million is for drought response, (new funds, carry-over and repurposed UNICEF regular resources), and USD 2.1 million is for refugee response, leaving a funding gap of USD 73.7 million (58 per cent). Soft funding pipeline is approximately USD 13 million mainly from USAID/BHA, ECHO EDF, Education Cannot Wait ECW, Australian Natcom - Horn of Africa Drought and FCDO for various UNICEF sectors delivering critical lifesaving intervention

It’s OK to have mixed feelings about International Women’s Day. What began in the early 20th century as a radical socialist feminist event has morphed – particularly over the last decade or so – into something sprawling, all-encompassing and occasionally murky in its message. 

We urgently need to see action and investment in women and girls' health, hopes, and empowerment.
